In the deciduous dentition there are a total of twenty teeth until being replaced by permanent teeth. It is a common that parents may neglect the importance of deciduous teeth while the fact is that unhealthy deciduous teeth result in irregular eruption of permanent teeth such as overcrowding. Deciduous teeth also play a significant role in chewing and speech. Missing or decayed teeth make it difficult to chew causing children to reject food and subsequently unable to attain good nutrition. A gap or chipped tooth also results in clear speech and children’s confidence.

Parents should not only pay attention to children’s oral care, they should also build proper dental care behavior and provide dental education to their children. Brushing for small children, it may be easier to cradle his or her head in one of your arm while brushing for them with the free arm. For a bigger children, you should stand behind your child, use one hand to hold your child’s chin while the other to brush for them thoroughly including the tongue. You should brush for them at least twice a day (morning and night). It is also important to educate them with healthy food consumption, minimizing soda or candies to prevent tooth decay. Pedodontics also focuses on preventive dentistry which includes:-

Fluoride application

Fluoride is a chemical substance used in dentistry to efficiently prevent tooth decay. Fluoride increases acid resistant and strength to the teeth. Fluoride application is therefore a simple and efficient way in preventive dentistry. Pedodontist starts fluoride application for children at the age of 3 when they can control their swallowing behavior. It is recommended to apply fluoride on children’s teeth every 6 months until the age of 15 years.

Fluoride application procedures: The dentist uses a mouth tray filled with fluoride product for a child to bite on. The process lasts only 5 minutes. No drinking or food consumption or mouth rinsing for 30 minutes afterward while waiting for the fluoride to be delivered onto the teeth.
