Patients may need partial or full dentures to resume normal function and sustain quality of life. Dentures also help maintain gum conditions and support overall facial appearance.
With our own laboratory, The Dentist Clinic can offer you a high quality denture with similar look and feel to natural teeth as an option to those who have lost several teeth or all teeth, especially the elders.
Type of Dentures
1. Removable Dentures
Removable dentures can be removed from your mouth for cleaning. Made of plastic or metal, these removable dentures are inexpensive while their size may impede chewing or normal speech. With removable dentures, chewing pressure is on the gum ridges and it may cause a gum slump. After a long period of usage, removable denture may no longer fit properly as they are loosen from original fitting.
Removable dentures are for those who have lost too many teeth that permanent dentures are not a viable option, those who have gum disease or severe cavities or those who are unable to take proper oral care. Removable denture cleaning and maintenance are simple and do not have a major impact on the remaining natural teeth.
Removable dentures must be removed for cleaning and soaked in water overnight to reduce the pressure on the gum tissue. Wearing removal dentures for a prolonged period will result in irritation to mouth tissue, inflammation or cyst, and bad breath.
2. Permanent Dentures
Permanent dentures such as bridges, crowns or implants give natural look and feel as they are mimicking natural teeth from the root to the teeth. In addition, the chewing function is almost as efficient as natural teeth since the chewing pressure is transferred to jaw bone. These dentures are also stronger with minimum impact to surrounding natural teeth and gum tissue.
However, fabricating and fitting permanent dentures take longer, approximately 1-4 months. For example, in case of an implant and crown it takes some time for an implant to fuse with the bone before a crown can be fitted. Implant is also more expensive than any other dentures.
Cleaning and maintaining permanent dentures are the same as natural teeth. Proper dental care will prolong the usage of permanent dentures which normally lasts 6 month to 5 years. If the dentures are damaged, they should be replaced immediately.
