Root Planning

Why do we need root planning?

Root planning and scaling is one of the most effective ways to treat gingivitis or periodontitis . Root planning and scaling is done to remove tartar and hard crusty calculus that is loaded with bacteria, around and below the gum line. Gum tissue may be infected, during the process it is advised not to swallow the saliva which could be full of bacteria.

Root Planning Procedures

At the Dentist Clinic, we use X-Ray to help expedite the diagnosis. If a patient is diagnosed with periodontal disease, the loss of bone and attachment tissues supporting the teeth, one of the initial and essential treatment is root planning and scaling. In some cases with severe gum infection, patients are treated with anti-biotic first (oral rinse is also recommended during this infection period) until the gum is strong enough for root planning and scaling processes to clean bacteria around the root and scale the plaque. After the treatment the gum is healthier and reattaches to the teeth. If gum recession or bone loss continue after the treatment, a surgery may be needed.

Prevention

Gum disease can be prevented by proper oral care including brushing a least twice a day, oral rinse after brushing or after meals, and flossing. Oral check-up and scaling every 6 months are also a basic prevention as accumulated plaque and calculus eventually cause gum disease.
