A dental crown is a restoration made of porcelain or metal to cover a tooth that disfigured or severely damaged to resume its normal function. A crown also protects damaged tooth weakened by decay, fracture or root canal treatment. It helps retaining the position of the original tooth and being a significant support role for the bridge and implant process.
Dental Crown Materials
1. Porcelain fused to metal (PFM). Suitable for back teeth as they require strength for heavy duty such as grinding and chewing. Similar color to natural teeth.

2. All ceramic. Suitable for front teeth as it can best mimic the light reflective property of the natural teeth.

3. Full metal crown (FMC). Most durable as it cannot be chipped or fractured.

Dental Crown Procedures
1. An impression of the tooth is made and sent to the dental laboratory for crown fabrication.
2. While the permanent crown is being fabricated, a temporary crown is placed until the next appointment.
3. At the second appointment, the temporary crown is replaced by the permanent crown.
